Tips and Tricks

How do you evade the horde?

  • Wear your bandana on your arm at all times! Going to class/work/missions/other obligations does NOT exempt you from being able to be tagged. Even fire drills/alarms make you fair game. Not wearing your bandana makes the game less fun for everyone, so just wear it.

  • lie to the zombies. If you're discussing plans publicly on the forum to complete a mission, get backup for a class, etc... give a false time and place to distract the zombies and then privately discuss your real plans using AIM.

  • DBAD Above all, dont be a dick! Have fun with the game, but dont get hyper obsessed and be a jerk about it. We all are here to have fun, so mindless squabbling/fighting/arguing/etc is pointless. If you don't wear your bandana, ok maybe you'll "win" the game but you'll miss out on all the fun and you'll make the game suck for everyone.

  • New door handle rule. Closed door handles are only safe for up to 5 minutes during one 60 minute period. Thus you can simply wait a zombie out, and they will not be save by this rule after 5 minutes, at which time you can sock them. If they go inside, then you take the door handle, and follow them, you will be safe.

  • Door Handle (cont) Don't go for a locked door, because if that door is locked, it is considered part of the wall, and is therefore not safe, as opposed to an unlocked door which you can open where you are actually safe for 5 minutes.

  • If spotted... don't linger: A lot of times what will happen (especially as we get further into the game and the zombies get more organized) is a zombie will spot you somewhere (in a building, library, on campus, etc) but knowing that you are ninja as hell, won't attack you. Instead, he/she will then get on his/her cell phone and start calling friends so that they can sit with you while you eat, study, etc. and wait until you leave to kill you. You have two options: call in help of your own or get moving asap. Better to fight one zombie than ten.

  • He who has the brightest flashlight, wins: During night ambushes, attacking zombies have been known to use high-powered flashlights to blind and disorient their human prey as they close in for the kill. This will have a detrimental effect on your marksmanship. Do it to them first: carry your brightest mag light with you if you're out after dark. (lx: I was the one who provided said flashlights, they are military grade, maglights are like a damn candle compared... your best bet, if you see any lights or suspicious activity... RUN!)(Luke's law #68: As long as I have a surefire and you have a maglight, I will always win.)

  • Weather Related: Wind, even just a moderate wind or gusts, can really affect the range (+/- 10 ft) and accuracy of your socks. Get some practice.

  • Take a tour It's a great way to avoid zombie attacks. They're a little out of the way, but entire hordes of zombies will pass right by you without blinking an eye. After all, they're only prefrosh.

  • Rainy Day Alert Bandanas are MUCH harder to spot when they are under an umbrella. Don't trust anyone that you can't clearly identify as non-zombie.

  • Zombies have class, too This can't be said enough. If you can afford to wait the extra 10 minutes (or lose 10 minutes of sleep), do it! You are far better off walking back to the dorms when there are 5 people within 100 feet than when there are 50 people within 10 feet.

  • If you can, walk on the grass This is particularly useful down near the Arts Quad and Ho Plaza. If you're staying off paths and crossing big stretches of grass, it's going to be much more obvious if someone (read: a zombie) breaks off from the path and starts going after you. While there are advantage to hiding in the crowd, don't forget that zombies can do that one too.

  • Use shortcuts and longcuts Carry around a campus map, and be aware of alternate routes at all times. Sometimes its better to cut through some places, and sometimes its better to take a long way around. Always have at least a plan B.

  • Hide your socks! While this was more relevant when Nerf Guns were still allowed, carrying armloads of socks will still be a big tip off to Zombies that you're playing. Conceal your weapons in pockets, or covered by a jacket (which, for easy access, can be left open), or in your backpacks -- somewhere you can reach them, but they aren't too visible.

  • Get ready while you can You're most likely to get eaten when you're least expecting it -- so do something to be ready. Are your hands full? Unless you're holding socks, put it away and start paying attention.

  • Don't trust ANYONE! Not even non-players. Some may not understand the finer points of the game, or may not even be aware that the game is going on (if that's even possible at this point) and can be easily manipulated or used as bait.

  • Be VERY VERY Careful Who You Tell What Sure it's cool to see another fellow human and have a chat about awesome this game is but remember, the next time you see this person they could be a zombie, so unless you're banding together as some of the last humans left, don't go telling them where you live and where you are going. This is especially crucial as some zombies are using the delay in tag entry to their terrible advantage.

  • Turn down or take off your iPods. Listening to your Ipod too loudly not only destroys your hearing, but it also decreases your awareness of your surroudings. One minute your minding your own business, jamming to Britney Spears or whatever then WHAM! Zombie chomps you down for lunch. Take off the headphones and keep fighting the good fight!

  • Make yourself as discreet as possible. Try to duck and hide amongst the crowd of non-players. Walk really fast or better run to/from safe area to safe area (it will look like you're late to class or something). Do wear your headband on your arm. Don't wave your arm and leg around (i.e. waving to friends, dancing on Ho Plaza) because that brings attention to your bandana which confirms your precious humanity.

  • Find a wingman. If you can find even one other person going to the same building you are, you'll double both your firepower and perception. If you're attacked, you'll be able to take turns reloading/ pulling out socks and protect each other. In a real pinch, you can even split up; if the group of zombies after you splits too, at least you've got less to deal with.

  • Prepare while you can. Get in some target practice with that Nerf Maverick. Unless you're a track star, you're going to want to be able to stop a zombie without wasting ammo.

  • Speaking of ammo, buy extra. Socks are cheap. Make sure you don't care about losing them.

  • Mark your socks. Put your name or some other distinctive mark on your socks so that you can differentiate them from your friends' socks.

  • Walkie-talkies can be bought at Walmart for $20 a pair. They claim 6-mile range, but may require line-of-sight to get long-range reception. 2-mile range walkie-talkies can be bought at Target for like $17.

  • Plan movement time wisely. You are much better off moving about when there aren't crowds around. Try going to classes while other classes are in session, eating at erratic hours, and avoid mainstream areas.

  • Get your friends to use this wiki. These aren't normal zombies; they can plan ambushes and cooperate to catch you. A little information can go a long way in a fight like this. If you and everyone you know add entries to the sightings, we'll have a comprehensive database here.

  • Be Mindful of Ambushes Be extra careful on the bridges. The footbridge and the Thurston bridge are easy ambush spots. I'm thinking central campus will be the main feeding ground, so you need to watch out whenever you're in the arts quad or Ho Plaza. For those of you who are runners, since we will be having some beautiful weather you're probably going to be outside for awhile. Try to run in secluded areas such as the plantations, etc.

  • Don't Let Your Guard Down! For God's sake, look behind you whenever you're not in a safe zone! According to one zombie, a lot of people aren't doing that! Even when you are in a safe zone, look around to see if there are any zombies that may follow you out.

  • Stand in open areas! If you must stand in a place for a long time (i.e. waiting for the bus,) stand in an open area where it will be obvious when someone is approaching you with malicious intent. This is, of course, if there isn't a safe zone nearby.

  • Buses are safe They are an easy way to get around campus quickly and safely. The only problem is getting on and off, utmost caution must be used during these times. Try to see if theres a zombie on the bus by looking in the windows as u exit. Look to see if theres zombies outside as u exit. Theoretically you could tell a zombie on a bus to 'stop following you' using as it says in the rules, forcing them to exit the different door, and giving you a chance to stun them in the 10-15 feet between the two bus doors.

Adding your tips

It's pretty simple-- just make a bullet with an asterix and a space before your entry, as shown above. Try to at least attempt to use proper english grammar, capitalization and punctuation; you're typing this up so that other people can read it and get information from it, so act like it.
